Mobility, stiffness & range of motion

Why Shoulder Mobility Matters for Putting on a Coat, Washing Hair and Reaching Shelves

What mobility means

Mobility is how far and how freely your shoulder can move. Strength is how much force you can make. Mobility is about range.

Everyday tasks need both. You reach for a high shelf. You pull a sweater over your head. You reach behind you to find the second sleeve of a coat.

Why it changes

Stiffness can come from several sources. Less movement is one. Tight, unused muscles and joint or tendon problems are others, and some need a diagnosis.

Mobility matters for daily life. In adults 60 and older, mobility, strength, body composition and posture are each linked to shoulder pain and disability [R28]. A link is an association, though. The research cannot say that better mobility alone solves pain.

What the research says

  • Mobility, strength and posture are each linked to shoulder pain and disability in older adults. These are modifiable targets, meaning they can be worked on [R28].
  • Thai yoga, done twice a week for 12 weeks, improved shoulder reach and other function in sedentary adults over 60, compared with a control group [R11].
  • Mobilization and stretching improved function and pain over about two months in a 2025 review [R03].
  • For adults 65 and older, the WHO recommends activity that builds balance and strength on at least three days a week [R07].

What you can do

  1. Move inside a pain-free range. Go only as far as feels comfortable. Add a little more range over several weeks.
  2. Draw a big, slow circle. Sit tall and hold your hands in front of you. Make one large, unhurried circle, then reverse it.
  3. Practise a shelf reach. Use a sturdy surface at home that you can reach safely. Lift the arm slowly, pause, and lower it. Seated or standing works.
  4. Keep moving in short bursts. A few minutes of gentle movement through the day adds up, and it is easier to keep than one long session.
  5. Warm up before a big task. Spend a minute on slow shoulder rolls before hanging curtains or carrying groceries.

Where ShoulderBack Pro fits — and where it doesn't

Around the World, one large unhurried circle in front of you, is designed to work the serratus anterior and lower trapezius, which guide the shoulder blade as the arm rises. The Overhead Press (High Shelf Reach) is the closest match to reaching a shelf. Both work seated, and one arm resists the other so you set the range and effort.

It cannot restore lost movement or tell you why a shoulder is stiff. It's a simple movement tool, not a treatment; nobody has run a clinical trial on it. The trainer is $29 CAD with a 30-day guarantee.

When to see a professional

See a doctor or physiotherapist promptly if you have: pain after a fall or injury with sudden weakness or loss of movement; a shoulder that looks deformed, very swollen or bruised; fever or feeling unwell alongside the pain; chest pain or breathlessness (call emergency services); constant pain that doesn't change with rest or activity; pain that wakes you most nights; numbness, tingling or weakness into the arm or hand; pain in several joints at once; or pain that hasn't improved after a couple of weeks of sensible self-care.

If your shoulder suddenly loses movement in every direction, or stiffness keeps getting worse over weeks, see a clinician. Frozen shoulder is a real condition. The idea that it simply resolves on its own is not supported. Untreated cases often improve only partly [R19].

Frequently asked questions

Is shoulder stiffness just part of getting older?

Many people notice stiffness with age, but sudden or painful loss of movement is not something to wait out. See a clinician.

Can gentle movement improve mobility?

Mobilization and stretching improved function and pain over about two months in one 2025 review. Results vary from person to person.

How often should I move my shoulders?

The WHO counts all movement toward weekly targets. Adults 65 and older should add strength and balance work on at least three days a week.

Is ShoulderBack Pro good for mobility?

It can be a gentle, controlled way to move through range while seated or standing. It cannot diagnose a problem or restore movement that has been lost.
