Habit Stacking for Mobility: Attach Movement to Coffee, Kettle and TV
4-minute read · Published September 24, 2025 · Updated September 24, 2025

Why this works
A habit runs on a cue. When you already do something every day, that action can become the signal for the next one. You do not have to decide to move. The kettle clicks on, and you move.
This is a simple way to get movement into a day that is already full. It works for people who find long workouts hard to fit in.
What the research says
- The authors of a large Cochrane review of exercise for chronic low back pain suggested that people choose exercise they enjoy and will keep doing. No single type of exercise clearly won [R05]. That review was about back pain, not shoulders, but the advice fits any routine.
- The WHO's guidance says that every move counts. Adults aged 65 and over benefit from multicomponent activity, including balance and strength, at least three days a week [R07].
What you can do
Every step can be done seated.
- Pick one cue. Choose something you do every day: the kettle, your first coffee, the first sip of water, or the TV ad break.
- Pick one or two gentle moves. Try a shoulder-blade slide, a few slow arm circles, or a seated reach.
- Attach the moves to the cue. Do them while the kettle heats or the coffee brews. Sit tall, and keep the moves easy.
- Keep it tiny. Start small so it is easy to do on a busy day. You can add more later.
- Tick it off. A mark on a calendar helps the habit feel real.
- Swap the cue if needed. If the kettle habit slips, choose a new cue and start again.
Where ShoulderBack Pro fits — and where it doesn't
The three-minute "Refreshing Awareness" ritual (see the routines) (SeeSaw, Open The Door, Windshield Wipers) is about the right length for a kettle or coffee cue. SeeSaw is a gentle alternating reach with one arm guiding the other, and Open The Door swings the forearms outward with the elbows at your sides. Keep the effort easy; the other arm provides the resistance.
It's a wellness product, not a medical device, and no clinical trial has studied it. It costs $29 CAD with a 30-day guarantee, and you can find it on the shop page.
When to see a professional
See a doctor or physiotherapist promptly if you have: pain after a fall or injury with sudden weakness or loss of movement; a shoulder that looks deformed, very swollen or bruised; fever or feeling unwell alongside the pain; chest pain or breathlessness (call emergency services); constant pain that doesn't change with rest or activity; pain that wakes you most nights; numbness, tingling or weakness into the arm or hand; pain in several joints at once; or pain that hasn't improved after a couple of weeks of sensible self-care.

How long should a habit routine be?
Short enough to do every day. WHO guidance says every move counts [R07].
What if I miss a day?
Pick the habit back up at the next cue. One missed day does not cancel the habit.
Can I do this seated?
Yes. A coffee or kettle routine can be done seated, with the moves kept gentle and controlled.
